„Marianne (Veldpaus, red.) haalde me over.

For fans of Pussycat, Mississippi cannot be sung often enough: ‘But at some point it’s enough’

Fifty years after the world hit Mississippi and forty years after the end of the band Pussycat, a fan club still keeps the memory alive. In Amstenrade, nostalgia prevailed during the – probably last – meeting on Sunday.

Of course, Mississippi. As soon as the first notes of the steel guitar sound, a smile appears on the lips of most of those present in café Jan van Cep in Amstenrade. Where else than here, where nostalgia colors the interior, the fan club day of one of Limburg’s most successful bands had to be held.

Sisters
The story of Pussycat is well known. The band was formed in the early seventies with the three singing sisters Veldpaus from Brunssum as the centerpiece. In 1975 Mississippi was released, which reached number one in the charts in fifteen countries. In England it even became the first number 1 hit from Dutch soil.

After the gigantic success, a few more high-scoring singles followed, but in 1985 the cake was over. In later years, Toni, Marianne and Betty are sometimes on stage together, but a real reunion does not happen. However, Mississippi has been included in the collective musical memory of the Netherlands.

To give that memory a helping hand, Lou Willé, guitarist and ex-husband of frontwoman Toni, wrote a book a few years ago about the success years of the band he co-founded. After a German version, an English translation has recently been published. Willé proudly hands over the first copies in the café.

Awareness
“You know, I don’t really need these kinds of meetings,” Willé says in all honesty. “Marianne (Field Pope, ed.) persuaded me. Now that I’m here, I really like it. Some people have traveled for hours to get to Amstenrade. There is still life in the whole Pussycat thing. When we were successful, you were on a train that kept on thundering. It wasn’t until years later that we realized that we had done something unique, as a Limburg band.”

In the meantime, Jan van Cep is sneaking through the business he handed over to son Pieter last year. The scratchy seventy-something was regularly on stage with Pussycat. “In the beginning, they often came to the café, after all, they came from the neighborhood. And the first fan club day was held here 25 years ago. Nice that they came. Also manager Eddie Hilberts, an icon. Those are all great memories.”

Now that I’m here, I really like it. Some people have traveled for hours to get to Amstenrade

Ferdinand Klotz and his wife are standing at a table. From the station in Nuth they walked to Amstenrade. “We come from Uden, Brabant,” says Klotz, who turns out to be a cousin of the Veldpaus sisters. “That was talked about with pride within the family. I have followed them since the beginning. They also often sang in our neighborhood and even now we regularly visit Marianne. Especially now that this is the last time, we wanted to be there.”

Rusty
And then the music starts. The vocals sound a bit rusty, but when Marianne’s voice is warmed up, the undulating tones of Mississippi automatically come through the microphone. Partly carried by the swaying audience.

The last time. Marianne in particular thinks it’s enough. “There is a bit of emotion involved. Yesterday was the anniversary of Betty’s death (middle of the three Veldpaus sisters who died last year, ed.). Coincidentally, on the day of Theo’s cremation (Coumans, drummer in the successful years, died two weeks ago, ed.). Toni doesn’t have to do this either. Personally, I always like a day like that, but at some point it’s enough.”

Pia and her husband Pea Hemsen just pick up on that. The couple turns out to be from Denmark and is making a tour of the area and saw the announcement of the fan club on Facebook. With a little shuffling in the planning, they were able to visit Amstenrade. They turn out to be big Pussycat fans. “From the very beginning,” says Pia. “I can’t explain it, but the music touches you in the heart. That harmony singing and then with the instruments. Pea nods in agreement and sums it up powerfully: “There’s just a lot of music in it.”

‘Thei Drum always trambled during the break’

“Theo always went ’tramping’ through the hall during the breaks of the band. He enjoyed the attention,” says former Pussycat singer Marianne Veldpaus about the death of the first Pussycat drummer Theo Coumans.

“We called him Thei Drum because there was another Thei in the band and he
played bass guitar. I was shocked by Theo’s death, he was a very sweet nice guy.”

Coumans, born in Obbicht, died Monday in Alicante, Spain, at
the age of 76. He drummed with Pussycat until 1978 and thus experienced the heyday of the successful Limburg band.

On Sunday 29 June there will be a Pussycat fan club day in Amstenrade. From 13:00 the
fans are welcome at café Jan van Cep and there will certainly be a talk about Coumans and the former Pussycat singer Betty Dragstra, who died last year.

Sad news: Theo Coumans (76) passed away

We are so grieved to hear about the passing of Theo Coumans (Obbicht (Limburg, Netherlands) 8 May 1949 – Alicante (Valencia, Spain) 16 June 2025),
the first drummer of ‘Pussycat’ (1975 – 1978).
It’s unbelievable! He will be sadly missed!
May his soul be at eternal peace! My sincere condolences to his family.

This is what is daughter Wendy wrote on Facebook:

The last drum has beaten 🥁

Never your voice again
Never your smile again
Never a hug in your strong arms again 😢

Dear daddy, how I will miss you 💫
Thank you for everything!!
I love you ❤️

and of course, this is how we all knew Theo, behind the drums….

Coumans was part of Pussycat in the band’s most successful years, between 1975 and 1978. Because Pussycat had two musicians named Theo. To distinguish, we talked about Thei Bas and Thei Drum. As a drummer, he was the silent force behind the group’s worldwide success. Pussycat became world famous with the mega hit “Mississippi”, which in 1975 grew into a number 1 hit in the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, South Africa, New Zealand and the United Kingdom, among others. The song sold millions of copies and even ranked 1 on the British chart — unique for a Dutch band.
Pussycat appears three times in the renowned BBC program Top of The Pops. The successor Smile also scores well at home and abroad. Numerous TV appearances follow. In March 1978, the band toured South Africa.

In that same period, Pussycat also scored great hits with songs such as “Georgie”, “Smile”, and “My Broken Souvenirs” – all timeless soft pop classics with melancholic lyrics, characteristic singing together of the sisters Toni, Betty and Marianne Veldpaus, and the solid accompaniment of their backing band, in which Theo Coumans played an important role.

Farewell Pussycat

In May 1978, Coumans left the band. That is not without a fight. He hires a lawyer to claim his royalties and gauges from the upcoming live performances until December 1 of that year. This is described in the book De Mississippi Stroomt Door Limburg by Pussycat guitarist and vocals Lou Willé. Hans Lutjens, one of the band’s first drummers, eventually succeeds him.

With the death of Theo Coumans, the Netherlands again loses a musician who was part of one of the greatest pop success stories in the history of national music. His contribution to the sound of Pussycat will always live on in the records that have been left to us.

There’s always a smile
to remember that you were here.

About the Song “Mississippi”

Mississippi: A Europop Anthem by Pussycat

In the realm of 1970s Europop, few songs have achieved the enduring popularity and cultural impact of “Mississippi” by the Dutch girl group Pussycat. Released in 1975, this infectious ditty took the world by storm, topping charts across Europe and beyond, and cementing its place as one of the most recognizable and beloved Europop anthems of all time.

Pussycat, a trio of sisters – Toni, Marianne, and Betty – hailing from the small Dutch town of Brunssum, burst onto the music scene with a vibrant blend of country, pop, and disco influences. Their sound was undeniably catchy, infused with a youthful energy and exuberance that resonated with audiences worldwide.

“Mississippi” epitomized Pussycat’s signature style. The song’s opening notes, a jaunty strumming of acoustic guitar, immediately set the tone for a carefree, sun-drenched escapade. The melody, simple yet irresistibly hummable, weaves through the verses and chorus, punctuated by the sisters’ sweet and harmonious vocals.

Lyrics, penned by Werner Theunissen, paint a picture of longing and desire, as the narrator dreams of escaping to the idyllic shores of the Mississippi River. The imagery is vivid and evocative, transporting listeners to a world of rolling hills, lush greenery, and the gentle flow of the river.

“Mississippi”‘s production, masterminded by Eddy Hilberts, is equally captivating. Layered synthesizers, a driving drumbeat, and subtle flourishes of country instrumentation create a soundscape that is both danceable and sophisticated. The arrangement is a testament to Hilberts’ skill in crafting pop anthems that stand the test of time.

The song’s impact was immediate and undeniable. “Mississippi” topped charts in over 10 countries, including the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, France, and South Africa. It sold over five million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling singles of the 1970s.

Pussycat’s success with “Mississippi” catapulted them to international stardom. They toured extensively throughout Europe and beyond, captivating audiences with their energetic live performances and infectious stage presence. The song’s popularity also spawned numerous cover versions, further cementing its status as a Europop classic.

“Mississippi”‘s legacy extends far beyond its commercial success. The song has become a cultural touchstone, appearing in films, television shows, and commercials. Its melody and lyrics have been etched into the collective consciousness, instantly recognizable to generations of music lovers.

Pussycat’s “Mississippi” stands as a timeless testament to the power of Europop to transcend borders and unite listeners through the shared language of music. Its infectious melody, charming lyrics, and captivating production have ensured its place in the pantheon of pop anthems, continuing to delight and inspire audiences worldwide.

The Pussycat Book comes out in English and German

Lou Willé: “Hello Pussycat fans,

After corresponding extensively with English Publishers and Agencies 92 in total, we received the attention of “Austin Macauley Publishers in London”.

I can say, it took us a lot of work, but we did it.

So at the moment we have a German Publisher: Angelica Gontadse and an English Publisher with which we have signed a contract for the Pussycat Book.

Yes, Harm Peter and I are very happy that it has come to this. And we can also say that we are extremely grateful to Luud Tilly for the effort he has put into this. Especially the translation work into German and English, where he has received praise for his translation work from the German and English publishers. I cannot yet say with certainty when both books will be released.

As soon as I receive the ISBN number for the German and English book, I will announce this”.

The English version is called: Pussycat – “The Mississippi flows in the Netherlands”.

The German version is called: Pussycat — “Der Mississippi fließt in die Niederlande”.

Greetings Lou Willé

Betty Dragstra – Veldpaus In Memoriam

‘Mississippi, I’ll remember you …’
Oh, how we loved listening to the Dutch pop and country act Pussycat.

Betty Dragstra (72), singer from the band Pussycat, died.

Betty had been ill for quite some time. She died a few days after her 72nd birthday.

Betty formed the band Pussycat together with sisters Tonny and Marianne. They did that from a young age. The band broke through in 1975 with the song ‘Mississippi’. Betty, Toni and Marianne also achieved international success with that song. The song managed to reach the top of the charts in fifteen countries. The trio also scored international hits with ‘Georgie’ and ‘Smile’.

The band broke up in 1985. Fourteen years later, in 1999, there was a short reunion.

Betty’s funeral took place in a private ceremony.

Dear Betty,

How much we have loved each other for more than half a century. The start was not easy, we were still very young.  Our little family became complete when our son Nollie was born. What a good time we had after that until now.  You and your sisters have experienced a lot in the world of music. Drinking coffee at  Joke. Our two great grandchildren, Lode and Siet.  And their parents Pascalle and Nollie. We recently had a very nice conversation together and then hugged each other tightly.  And confirmed how much we have loved each other all these years.  I will never forget that moment.  We also experienced such a moment in the hospital together with Nollie, Pascalle, Lode and Siet.  You opened your eyes, waved at us and you hugged us all and made funny remarks.
Betty, every morning you called me around nine o’clock, until the morning it remained silent. Now we say goodbye forever and it hurts a lot.

Betty, we love you and we are going to miss you very much.

In loving memory of

Betty Dragstra – Veldpaus
