De reden dat de onlangs overleden Hans Lutjens niet drumde op Mississippi van Pussycat, is dat hij tafelvoetbal belangrijker vond dan repeteren met de band. Dat zegt oud-gitarist Lou Willé in een reactie op het overlijden van de drummer vorige week vrijdag.
Volgens Willé speelde Hans op vrijdagavond tafelvoetbal, en dat terwijl de band altijd op zaterdag repeteerde. “Omdat hij vaak door het tafelvoetbal verstek liet gaan en hij merkte dat wij dat niet leuk vonden, besloot hij de band te verlaten.”
Eigenlijk vrouwenband
Drummer Lutjens en gitarist Willé waren de eerste mannelijke leden van Sweet Reaction, in eerste instantie bedoeld als vrouwenband. De drie zussen uit Brunssum – Toni, Betty en Marianne Veldpaus – speelden namelijk ook instrumenten. Er was klein internationaal succes want optredens waren er niet alleen in Nederland, maar ook in Duitsland en België.
Toch werd het vooral als een leuke hobby gezien. Een hobby die door Lutjens niet zo leuk werd gevonden als het tafelvoetbal, reden dat hij dit verkoos boven zijn muzikale aspiraties. Hij besloot hierop in 1973 de groep te verlaten.
Drukke werkzaamheden
Bij zijn terugkeer naar Pussycat in 1978 gaf Hans zelf in de media aan dat hij zijn hobby als muzikant destijds niet meer kon combineren met zijn werk. Het zou te maken hebben met een overplaatsing naar de drieploegendienst. Daarnaast had hij in die periode een aantal persoonlijke tegenslagen, zo vertelde hij.
Pussycat
Een tijdje zaten Lou en de drie vrouwen zonder drummer, maar hierna werden een nieuwe drummer – Theo Coumans – en een bassist aangetrokken. Ook werd de naam veranderd in Pussycat. Na een half jaar repeteren en het versturen van opnames naar verschillende platenmaatschappijen werd een nummer van de Brunssumse band opgepikt: Mississippi.
De boot gemist
Het werd een een wereldhit, met een nummer-1-notering in negen landen. De single verkocht wereldwijd meer dan 5 miljoen exemplaren. De groep trad daarom over de hele wereld op. Volgens Willé baalde Lutjens ervan dat hij dat grote succes niet meemaakte. “Ben ik er net uit, scoren ze een wereldhit”, zo zou hij hebben verzucht.
Opnieuw aangesloten
In 1978 keerde hij terug achter het drumstel bij de band. Pussycat zat door een geschil met Theo Coumans namelijk weer zonder drummer. Op de reden van dit vertrek wil Willé niet meer ingaan. “Hou het er maar op dat we blij waren dat Hans weer aansloot.”
Hij verwijst daarbij naar het boek over de Brunssumse band, dat in in 2021 is verschenen. Het boek is getiteld De Mississippi stroomt door Limburg. Hij maakte het samen met schrijver Harm Peter Smilde.
Top40-hits
Met Lutjens achter het drumstel bracht Pussycat drie albums uit. Successen als Mississippi bleven uit, maar de groep scoorde nog wel enkele Top-40-hits, zoals It’s the same old song, Doin’ La Bamba en Then the music stopped.
Definitief einde
Pussycat besluit in in 1982 te stoppen als band. Volgens Willé had dit vooral te maken met de opkomst van de discjockeys. “Clubs wilden liever een DJ dan een band die kwam optreden.” Willé en de drie zussen traden nog wel op als bandartiesten. “Het was mijn ongelukkigste tijd, ik miste het spelen op mijn gitaar.”
Geen contact meer
“Lutjens was een goede en strakke drummer”, aldus Willé, “ook eentje met humor.” Nadat de band uit elkaar viel, verloren ze het contact. Hij kreeg het nieuws over zijn ziekte te horen van bassist Theo Wessels, die wel nog met Lutjens sprak. Onlangs vernam hij het overlijden van Hans.
Over de uitvaart van Hans Lutjens is nog niets bekend.
Met Lutjens verloor Pussycat zijn vierde bandlid. Eerder waren dat al zangeres Betty Dragstra (2024), drummer Theo Coumans (2025) en gitarist John Theunissen (2015). Geen bandlid, maar wel de belangrijkste songwriter van de band – hij schreef onder meer Mississippi – Werner Theunissen stierf in 2010.
Deceased former Pussycat drummer missed out on big success because of table football
The reason the recently deceased Hans Lutjens didn’t play drums on ‘Mississippi’ by Pussycat is that he thought foosball was more important than rehearsing with the band. That’s what former guitarist Lou Willé said in response to the drummer’s death last Friday.
According to Willé, Hans played table football on Friday evenings, even though the band always rehearsed on Saturdays. “Because he often skipped the band to play table football and noticed that we didn’t like that, he decided to leave the band.”
Actually a women’s band
Drummer Lutjens and guitarist Willé were the first male members of Sweet Reaction, which was initially meant to be a women’s band. The three sisters from Brunssum – Toni, Betty, and Marianne Veldpaus – also played instruments. They had a bit of international success, as their performances took place not only in the Netherlands but also in Germany and Belgium.
Still, it was mainly seen as a fun hobby. A hobby that Lutjens didn’t find as enjoyable as table football, which is why he chose it over his musical aspirations. He then decided to leave the group in 1973.
Busy work
When he returned to Pussycat in 1978, Hans himself said in the media that at the time he could no longer combine his hobby as a musician with his job. It had to do with a transfer to the three-shift system. Besides that, he went through a number of personal setbacks during that period, as he mentioned.
Pussycat
For a while, Lou and the three women were without a drummer, but after that, a new drummer – Theo Coumans – and a bassist were brought in. The name was also changed to Pussycat. After rehearsing for half a year and sending recordings to various record companies, a song by the band from Brunssum was picked up: Mississippi.
Missed the boat
It became a worldwide hit, reaching number one in nine countries. The single sold more than 5 million copies worldwide. The band performed all over the world because of it. According to Willé, Lutjens was bummed that he didn’t experience that huge success. “I just leave, and they score a worldwide hit,” he supposedly sighed.
Rejoined
In 1978, he returned to the drum kit with the band. Pussycat was again without a drummer due to a dispute with Theo Coumans. Willé doesn’t want to go into the reason for this departure anymore. ‘Let’s just say we were happy that Hans rejoined.’
He refers to the book about the Brunssum band, which was published in 2021. The book is titled The Mississippi Flows Through Limburg. He made it together with writer Harm Peter Smilde.
Top 40 hits
With Lutjens behind the drum kit, Pussycat released three albums. Hits like Mississippi never happened, but the group still scored a few Top 40 hits, such as It’s the Same Old Song, Doin’ La Bamba, and Then the Music Stopped.
Definitive End
Pussycat decided to stop as a band in 1982. According to Willé, this was mainly due to the rise of DJs. “Clubs preferred a DJ over a band coming to perform.” Willé and the three sisters still performed as solo artists. “It was my unhappiest time, I missed playing my guitar.”
No more contact
“Lutjens was a good and tight drummer,” said Willé, “also one with a sense of humor.” After the band broke up, they lost contact. He heard about his illness from bassist Theo Wessels, who was still in touch with Lutjens. Recently, he learned of Hans’s passing.
Nothing is known yet about Hans Lutjens’ funeral.
With Lutjens, Pussycat lost its fourth band member. Earlier, there had been singer Betty Dragstra (2024), drummer Theo Coumans (2025), and guitarist John Theunissen (2015). Not a band member, but the most important songwriter of the band – he wrote, among others, Mississippi – Werner Theunissen died in 2010.
