Hans Lutjens, de voormalig drummer van Pussycat, is vrijdag 28 augustus overleden.
Lutjens was al betrokken bij Sweet Reaction, de voorloper van Pussycat, maar vertrok in 1975. In mei 1978 keerde hij terug als opvolger van Theo Coumans. Hij bleef tot 1981 achter het drumstel zitten en maakte daarmee een belangrijk hoofdstuk uit de Nederlandse popgeschiedenis mee.
Lutjens speelde mee op de albums Wet Day in September uit 1978, Simply To Be With You uit 1979 en Blue Lights uit 1981. Ook was hij als drummer betrokken bij Pussycat-hits als Hey Joe, Wet Day in September, Daddy, Doin’ La Bamba en Then The Music Stopped. Met de Limburgse groep trad hij op in binnen- en buitenland. Eerder overleed in 2025 ook zijn voorganger Theo Coumans.
Hij leed al lange tijd aan kanker.

Hans Lutjens voegt zich weer bij de groep
Voordat de Limburgse topformatie,.Pussycat” een hit had met „Mississippi” stapte drummer Hans Lutjens uit de groep. Te drukke werkzaamheden en enkele tegenslagen achter elkaar dwongen hem daartoe. Met het spelen bij Pussycat was toentertijd geen cent verdiend dus het opstappen viel Hans niet zo zwaar. Vaak genoeg komt het voor dat iemand een hobby moet laten vallen door zijn werk. Hij zei de groep vaarwel en twee maanden later was Pussycat (Vanavond op het scherm bij de BRT-televisie) de populairste formatie van Nederlands bodem. Hans kon zich wel voor zijn kop slaan omdat hij niet kon delen in het succes. Twee weken geleden kreeg hij een nieuwe kans toen de drummer van Pussycat om privéredenen de groep moest verlaten. Hans maakt nu weer deel uit van de groep en hoopt dat voor hem nu ook zeven vette jaren in het verschiet liggen.
„In de periode dat Mississippi een hit werd heb ik me wel regelmatig voor mijn kop willen slaan van pure ellende” vertelt Hans Lutjens de kersverse drummer van Pussycat. „Alle pech die een mens maar kan nebben volgde zich toen in een paar weken achter elkaar op. Het begon met de lotto. Ik zat op de dagdienst bij de fabriek waar ik werkzaam was en we hadden daar met een groepje van 12 mensen een poul gevormd in de Duitse lotto. Nog nooit hadden we wat gewonnen. Toen kreeg ik van hogerhand te horen dat ik was overgeplaatst naar de drieploegendienst. Daardoor kon ik -niet meer met mijn collega’s meespelen. Laat ze nou verdikkeme twee weken later 280.000 gulden winnen. Vjjf goede plus reservegetal ik vergeet het nooit meer. 24.000 gulden de man kregen ze en ik zat er mooi naast
Hans Lutjens Passed Away
Hans Lutjens, the former drummer of Pussycat, passed away on Friday, August 28.
Lutjens had already been involved with Sweet Reaction, the predecessor of Pussycat, but left in 1975. In May 1978, he returned as the successor of Theo Coumans. He stayed behind the drums until 1981, experiencing an important chapter in Dutch pop history.
Lutjens played on the albums Wet Day in September from 1978, Simply To Be With You from 1979, and Blue Lights from 1981. He was also involved as a drummer in Pussycat hits like Hey Joe, Wet Day in September, Daddy, Doin’ La Bamba, and Then The Music Stopped. He performed with the Limburg band both at home and abroad. Earlier, in 2025, his predecessor Theo Coumans also passed away.
He had been suffering from cancer for a long time.

He said goodbye to the group, and two months later, Pussycat (tonight on BRT television) became the most popular band from the Netherlands. Hans could kick himself for not being able to share in the success. Two weeks ago, he got a new chance when Pussycat’s drummer had to leave the group for personal reasons. Hans is now part of the group again and hopes that seven good years are ahead for him as well.

“During the time Mississippi became a hit, I often felt like banging my head out of sheer misery,” says Hans Lutjens, the brand-new drummer of Pussycat. “All the bad luck a person could possibly have happened to me in just a few weeks. It started with the lottery. I was on the day shift at the factory where I worked, and with a group of 12 people, we had formed a pool for the German lottery. We had never won anything before. Then I was told from above that I had been transferred to the three-shift system. That meant I couldn’t play with my colleagues anymore. And of course, two weeks later, they went and won 280,000 guilders. Five correct numbers plus the reserve—I’ll never forget it. They each got 24,000 guilders, and I missed out completely.”
