Wereldhit
De band uit de Mijnstreek scoorde in 1976 met het nummer Mississippi een wereldhit. Ze staan op nummer 1 in Engeland, zijn daar te zien in de vermaarde tv-show Top Of The Pops en treden op over de hele wereld. Ten tijde van de rassenongelijkheid geven ze concerten in Zuid-Afrika, maar alleen op voorwaarde dat ze daar voor een gemengd publiek mogen spelen.
Zussen
De drie zussen Betty, Toni en Marianne Veldpaus zijn de blikvangers van de band. Muziekleraar en later ook songwriter Werner Theunissen komt op het idee om rond de drie zussen een meidenband te formeren. Die meidenband groeit later uit tot de formatie Pussycat. Gitarist en pianist Lou Willé is een van de mannen waarmee de zussen uiteindelijk de succesformatie zullen vormen.
Niet in de schaduw
Hij was niet alleen muzikant in de band, maar hij stuurde ook opnames naar platenmaatschappijen om ze te interesseren voor een platendeal. “De drie meisjes hebben altijd gezegd: ‘als Lou er niet bij was geweest had Pussycat nooit bestaan, jij hebt ons geholpen aan een carrière voor Pussycat’. Dat zal wel zo zijn, maar zonder de liedjes van Werner was dat ook niet gelukt.” Met Werner doet Willé op Werner Theunissen, die nagenoeg alle Pussycat-hits schrijft. “Tegenwoordig schrijf ik zelf liedjes, maar ik mag nog niet eens in de schaduw van Werner staan.”
Doodongelukkig
Na het uiteengaan van de band in 1981 gaan de zussen samen met Lou verder als tape-act. Ze stonden soms wel vier keer op een avond ergens op te treden. Op de vraag aan Lou of dat leuk was reageert Willé stellig: “Nee, dat was totaal niet leuk. Ik was doodongelukkig. Het was telkens een halfuurtje spelen, cashen en dan weer hetzelfde bij het volgende optreden. Dat stelde niks voor. Ik was doodongelukkig als vierde man bij Pussycat.”
Boek
Toch kijkt Lou met een tevreden gevoel terug op zijn tijd bij Pussycat. “Ik ben blij dat ik het allemaal mee heb mogen maken.” Willé zit nog steeds in de muziek, in de band Generate, maar gitaar en piano speelt hij niet meer. Een paar jaar geleden schreef hij samen met muziekjournalist Harm Peter Smilde het boek Pussycat, de Mississippi stroomt door Limburg.

World Hit
The band from the mining region scored a worldwide hit in 1976 with the song Mississippi. They reached number 1 in England, appeared there on the renowned TV show Top Of The Pops, and performed all over the world. During a time of racial inequality, they gave concerts in South Africa, but only on the condition that they were allowed to play for a mixed audience there.
Sisters
The three sisters Betty, Toni, and Marianne Veldpaus are the focal points of the band. Music teacher and later songwriter Werner Theunissen came up with the idea to form a girl band around the three sisters. That girl band later grew into the formation Pussycat. Guitarist and pianist Lou Willé is one of the men with whom the sisters would eventually form the successful group.
Not in the shadow
He was not only a musician in the band, but he also sent recordings to record companies to interest them in a record deal. “The three girls have always said: ‘If Lou hadn’t been there, Pussycat would never have existed; you helped us get a career for Pussycat.’ That may well be true, but without Werner’s songs, that wouldn’t have happened either.” By Werner, Willé refers to Werner Theunissen, who writes virtually all of Pussycat’s hits. “Nowadays I write songs myself, but I can’t even stand in Werner’s shadow.”
Miserable
After the band broke up in 1981, the sisters continued together with Lou as a tape act. They would sometimes perform somewhere as many as four times a night. When asked by Lou if that was fun, Willé responds firmly: “No, that was not fun at all. I was miserable. It was just playing for half an hour, cashing in, and then the same thing again at the next gig. It was nothing special. I was miserable as the fourth member of Pussycat.”
Book
Nevertheless, Lou looks back on his time with Pussycat with satisfaction. “I am glad that I got to experience it all.” Willé is still involved in music, in the band Generate, but he no longer plays guitar or piano. A few years ago, together with music journalist Harm Peter Smilde, he wrote the book *Pussycat, de Mississippi stroomt door Limburg.
